Main Duties and Responsibilities
•Lead FTChinese.com』s key data reporting, data visualization and multimedia reporting projects. Generate story ideas, undertake data research and processing, write and edit data and multimedia stories.
•Work with FT editorial desks in London and elsewhere to convert and translate FT and FT.com data stories for publication on FTChinese.com
•Liaise with FTChinese product and IT teams for design and coding work related to data visualization and multimedia reporting projects.
•The role requires an experienced data/multimedia reporter and editor with a proven record, who is capable of doing data research and working cross-boundaries with government agencies, economists, analysts, reporters, designers and programmers etc., and deliver data reporting projects, much like a product manager, from the very beginning of identifying suitable topics and ideas, through data collection and crunching, designing and coding, until eventual publication.
•As a key member of the editorial team, the data editor will work closely with editorial colleagues in China and the UK, as well as FTC』s business operation colleagues in promoting FT』s and FTC』s data journalism.
•The data editor will also be expected to closely monitor the latest trends in global data and visual journalism, monitor and learn from international and domestic competitor』s works to enrich his or her own skills, as well as take lessons and training courses necessary to produce high-quality data journalism for FTC.
•A strong news sense and demonstrable interest in what matters to FTChinese readership are key requirements for this role; candidates should understand the journalistic opportunities presented by financial, data and multimedia journalism
•Education backgrounds in data, multimedia or financial journalism, finance, statistics, or graphic design are preferred but not necessary.
•The candidate must have strong bilingual skills, an excellent writer in Chinese with a strong command of English, able to independently conduct research and interviews in English and translate FT』s English language data stories into Chinese.
•The candidate must have a proven track record as an innovative data editor with a strong portfolio of data reporting, data visualization and visual story-telling works. There should would preferably works with strong spatio-temporal data elements such as sophisticated maps or timelines.
•The post-holder is expected to have no less than four years of new media/journalistic experiences at a reputable media organization, as well as at least two years of experience in data visualisation or multimedia journalism. An excellent team player who can handle pressure and multitasking.
